Most complaints about widgets are about conduct rather than looks. Opening itself three seconds after arrival interrupts somebody reading, and it is the single most common grievance.
Be available and visible without demanding attention. Proactive opening earns its place on a page where somebody is plainly stuck, and almost nowhere else.
Install is a snippet. Customisation covers colour, position, copy and the greeting, so it reads as part of the site rather than as a bolted-on product.
And it says what it is. Pretending to be a person produces a worse reaction the moment the pretence fails, which it always does.
